BEI logo lockupIn this lecture, Dr Matthias Franke will discuss the global challenges and opportunities of waste management, and its growing role as a supplier of raw materials for industry and energy production. He will also discuss the development of a national waste management strategy for the Gulf region, a technical solution for recovery of critical elements, and solutions for powder recycling from Additive Manufacturing.

The global practice of waste management varies significantly between countries. On one hand, many countries in Europe and beyond still have high volumes of waste that are dumped untreated. On the other, progressive industrial nations, with an advanced waste management infrastructure, try to cover their demand for critical elements and materials by recovery from waste. However, the growing complexity of modern high-tech products and composite materials requires innovative concepts, and technical solutions for a sufficient recycling.

Based on his experiences from current and finished projects at Fraunhofer Institute for Environment, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT, Dr Franke will address and discuss challenges and solutions for developing and industrialised countries.

Dr Franke will highlight the Gulf region and introduce a concept for the development of a comprehensive waste inventory, and a national waste management strategy to bring the country to a state-of-the-art level of waste management within the next 20 years. Regarding the recovery of critical elements and composite materials, he will highlight the thermo-chemical conversion process, developed by Fraunhofer UMSICHT.
