“Smart Grid” is one of the hot topics in the global energy industry, it often appears in the media but what is “Smart Grid” and what is it for? What is the UK doing regarding “Smart Grid”?
Professor Ray Zhang is going to address these issues and introduce some “Smarter Grid” developments within the UK electricity transmission network in his lecture on Thursday 28 April.

Biography
Professor Ray Zhang, the Technical Leader of Protection, Control & Automation, has the overall technical responsibility for the secondary systems within National Grid Electricity Transmission, UK. Dr Zhang joined the National Grid in 1996 and has had held a number of managerial and technical positions. Previously he worked as the Technology Development Manager, leading the development of HVDC transmission, FACTs and Smart Grid technology. Some recent developments under his leadership include Multi-Terminal HVDC protection and control, IEC61850 based Substation Secondary Systems and Operational Cyber Security.
As the technical leader, he also has duty to direct National Grid R&D activities in the area of protection and automation. Over the last 20 years Ray has had many involvements in leading and promoting the collaboration between the industry and academia, in 2015 he was appointed as an honorary Professor by the University of Birmingham. Ray is a Charter Engineer, has a PhD in Power Engineering. He is currently the UK National Member in CIGRE Study Committee B5 (Protection and Automation).
