The facility consists of seven environmentally controlled compartments, constructed to class 1 & 2 GM plant growth containment regulations. They have fully automated lighting, temperature control and irrigation with shading and supplementary specialised lighting options and are capable of CO2 enrichment and class II plant pathogen exposure experiments on plant systems.  There are also two laboratory areas, a waste processing area and ancillary soil and lab stores.

One of the compartments in the Glasshouses is twice the size of the other six and provides the opportunity for further engagement and collaboration.

This flexible space which, when not being used as preparation and analysis space for experiments, will be available to a variety of audiences, including; school and sixth form classes, University of Birmingham Artists in Residence, SME partners (such as hydroponic companies), BIFoR volunteers and Undergraduate societies with an interest in environmental and conservation fields.
