Congratulations to Dr Hugh Houghton, who has been elected as the Executive Editor of the Pauline Epistles for the International Greek New Testament Project.

At the SBL Annual Meeting in San Antonio last month, the Deputy Director of ITSEE, Dr Hugh Houghton, was elected as Executive Editor of the International Greek New Testament Project (IGNTP), with responsibility for the Pauline Epistles. Dr Houghton is the third IGNTP executive editor to be based at Birmingham, following in the footsteps of Professor J. Neville Birdsall (British Executive Editor of Luke, 1971–78) and Professor David Parker (Executive Editor of John, 1987–). The position is open-ended, and involves overseeing the preparation of editions of the Greek text of the Pauline Epistles which are expected to appear in the Novum Testamentum Graecum Editio Critica Maior (ECM), published by the German Bible Society.

Dr Houghton said, "I'm delighted to have been asked to take on this responsibility. Both David Parker and Keith Elliott, the two most recent IGNTP executive editors, were among my teachers, and this is a wonderful opportunity to continue their work. I have enjoyed being a member of the IGNTP committee for the last ten years and seeing the edition of John take shape, as well as the committee itself become more diverse. This is a long-term project, and I'm looking forward to collaborating with numerous colleagues who will, I hope, share responsibility for the different epistles. In particular, I hope that the well-established links between ITSEE, the IGNTP and the INTF in Münster will continue to lead to the building-up of strong institutional, academic and personal relationships and stimulate co-operation on the ECM. It's a major task, but I am very pleased for this to be the focus of my research for many years to come."

Dr Houghton led the European Research Council-funded COMPAUL project on early commentaries on the Pauline Epistles. He has recently published books on the Latin New Testament and Commentaries, Catenae, and Biblical Tradition, and supervises a number of doctoral students working on projects related to the New Testament. He has also just been appointed a member of the editorial board of the journal New Testament Studies.
