ITSEE hosted Dr Luise Frenkel from the University of São Paolo under the Brazil Visiting Scholars programme from December 2016 to February 2017.

While Dr Frenkel was in Birmingham, she met with academics from a variety of fields connected with her own research into Late Antiquity, attending seminars and meetings in order to get a sense of the University as a whole as well as undertaking a programme of research. Her academic investigations included the examination of Syriac manuscripts in the Cadbury Research Library Mingana Collection of Middle Eastern Manuscripts, as well as the preparation of a presentation for the Second International Conference on Patristic Studies in San Juan, Argentina, which begins today.

Towards the end of Dr Frenkel's time at ITSEE, we were delighted to learn that she has been awarded a year-long research fellowship in the Max-Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt in 2018-19. Funded by the German National Research Agency (DFG), this will build on some of the work she undertook while in Birmingham.
