In the first of two June events, The Salon welcomes two provocateurs. Katherine Hubbard and Elizabeth McDermott will be in conversation about LGBTQ+ mental health. Come and join the discussion!

Katherine Hubbard is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Sociology University of Surrey. Her interdisciplinary research looks at psychology from a historical and sociological perspective. She utilises a queer feminist approach which centralises inclusivity. Her book Queer Ink: A Blotted History Towards Liberation focuses on the use of the Rorschach test in pathologising and depathologising histories of psychology.

Elizabeth McDermott is Professor of Mental Health & Society and Deputy Director of the Institute for Mental Health at the University of Birmingham. She is a public mental health interdisciplinary researcher, working in the fields of mental health inequalities, public health and health services research. She specialises in LGBTQ+ populations mental health and theory-led mixed methods research.

This monthly virtual discussion is part of the Mental Health and Medical Humanities Initiative, instigated by the Institute for Mental Health, but owned by scholars across campus at the University of Birmingham. Speakers act as ‘provocateurs’, offering brief 5-minute presentations that might be rooted in a reading, a piece of art, or a key theme from their research. The Salon aims to recreate stimulating, interdisciplinary discussions, which maximise ideas and collaborations and slot into hectic schedules.
