From corsets to crinolines, dandies to decadent ‘New Women’, fashions during the Victorian age were changing as fast as a steam locomotive.

Silhouettes and styles transformed radically every decade, influenced by the social, cultural and political forces of this era. Using a wide range of 19th-century images and primary source materials, Rebecca N. Mitchell discusses Victorian fashions and the key forces which influenced their making, unpicking the seams of one of the most intriguing and infuriating garments of the age: the crinoline.

Organised by the Nineteenth-Century Centre.
