Mayor's Mentors is an innovative initiative from West Midlands mayor Andy Street, bringing together the University of Birmingham’s College of Social Sciences and Lloyds Banking Group, supporting young people through matching them with mentors from each of these institutions. As well as benefiting young people, the scheme supports staff wellbeing and is aligned with the University's Five Ways to Wellbeing, specifically 'giving' and 'connecting'.

Careers Advisor, College of Social Sciences
I joined the mentoring scheme because I want to give something extra to what I am currently doing in my role. I have worked with 16 – 18 years olds previously and would like the chance to work with them again. I hope to be able to support a young person and to motivate them to be all they were created to be. I currently work as a Careers Adviser at a University and so I feel that my experience in HE will be valuable in helping young people to consider this as one of their options following school. Mentoring may help me to become further skilled when dealing with students here, but generally I want to be part of the University giving something back to the local community.

I joined the mentoring scheme for a couple of reasons. To improve my CV for when I move on from this role in the future. To gain experience in being a mentor after having a very good relationship with my mentor when I was studying through Open University, we are now good friends since my study finished but I gained so much from her. To be a person who will be there for a young person through some of the hardest times they will have to go through, leaving school and moving on is hard when we are adults but as a young person it can be even more daunting.

There are many reasons why I enjoy being part of the Mayor's Mentors scheme. Firstly, helping young people to develop their skills they need to succeed in their chosen careers gives me a feeling of great satisfaction. Secondly, having worked both as college’s Receptionist/Telephonist and as well as a qualified Careers Advisor, I enjoy using some of my transferable skills, as well as my mentoring qualification gained with UoB to mentor the mentees. Finally, it has enabled me to learn and understand some of the challenges young people today face in the ever changing landscape of the job market.

I wanted to join the Mayor’s Mentors Scheme because I have a genuine desire to help a young person in the region and feel that I have a lot to offer.
Having worked in all sectors of education (primary, secondary, further and higher), I believe education is about encouraging young people to make the most of every opportunity and ensuring that all young people can access these opportunities. I understand that success in education needs the input of the educational establishment, parents/carers/mentors and the student themselves.
Through both my professional work and my volunteering, I have actively encouraged and supported young people to access the widest possible range of educational opportunities and contribute to their local and global communities. The time I have spent working in education and volunteering in a nursery school in The Gambia has shown me the importance of education and how it can make a positive and lasting difference to the lives of young people, wherever they live.
When my 3 eldest children all left home for university in September 2016, I found it very difficult to adjust. I had invested so much in being a parent, that I felt a huge sense of loss. I think I will be able to share a great deal of experiences/challenges and knowledge and am sure that this scheme will give me an additional purpose in life and have a positive impact on my mental health and wellbeing.

I applied for this mentoring scheme because if it hadn’t have been for the support I received at school, I’m sure I wouldn’t be where I am now. Having someone to offer support and guidance can be invaluable and I really want to try and give that experience to another young person. I’m hoping that I can be the sounding board that they need at this point in their lives, and that I can share with them a little of the knowledge I’ve gained in a way that is going to support them to grow into whatever person they want to become. I know that however much I can teach my mentee, what I learn will be much greater. I’m hoping to gain some more understanding into the challenges facing young people today – it’s incredibly easy to judge against how things were when I left school, but so much has changed and I know that if I can learn from my mentee, I’ll be a more valuable member of society and a better support to them. I’m very excited to be part of something that is going to bring our community so much closer together.
My job basically entails supporting applicants who have questions about our postgraduate programmes, offering them guidance about which programmes would be appropriate and helping them through the application process. I also market our programmes at events and meet people from many different backgrounds and cultures. I’m hoping that this mentoring experience will allow me to develop better skills for understanding the needs of my applicants, especially in what support and guidance they need.

I joined the mentoring scheme because I feel that I have so much life experience that I could share with other people. I have 7 children and they are all different in their own ways and I have learnt so much from them. I hope to help someone else if possible using my experiences.
My current role is as a Social Work Administrator in the University of Birmingham, the Social Work and Social Care Department. I help the students and staff with a variety of queries each day and everyday there's a different challenge, which makes the role very interesting.
Postgraduate Careers Manager, College of Social Sciences
I joined the mentoring scheme for two main reasons. First, selfishly, I enjoy taking part in mentoring. I have mentored numerous university and high school level students in the past and think I enjoyed it more than the mentees did. It gives me a sense of accomplishment but also I learn from the experience often as much as he/she does. The second reason is that I feel that I should be giving back to the community and setting an example for others both at the University of Birmingham but in the local area as well. I hope to give both business and recruitment expertise as well as a lot of energy!
I believe I can help a mentee who may have no idea what they would like to do in his/her or career or I can help someone who has an idea of what he/she wants to do to set a clear strategy to set herself or himself apart from the crowd.
Development and Communications Manager, College of Social Sciences
I have previously volunteered as a mentor in Birmingham through the ‘Time Together’ project. I mentored a Sudanese asylum seeker for two years and helped her to navigate the city, complete complex paperwork, form a career plan and improve her English language skills. I found the experience extremely rewarding and this is one of the reasons I wanted to take part in the Mayor’s Million Mentors Scheme. Also, having two young children and working full time means that I don’t have much free time to ‘give back’ in my community, so to be given that time by the College allowed me to take up this fantastic opportunity.
I am enthusiastic to further develop my communication skills as I started in my communications role in March 2018 (having previously been a Project Manager) and still have lots to learn. Being a mentor for a young person, as part of the scheme, would help me to understand the ways in which they view the world and the types and content of communications that appeal most to them, which is an advantage in my job role.

I have joined the mentoring scheme to support young people to be the best version of themselves from the earliest possible age. I hope to provide each mentee with lifelong knowledge and skills to help them access education holistically. I will also be there to answer any questions they might have about learning. I will share my experience and skills with each individual based on their needs. My current role with the School of Education is focused on building key relationships with schools. By adding the additional mentoring dimension to my role it will help me remain closer to the challenges that students face. This will also help me to build better partnerships with local schools and to remain focused on the overall mission of the school, to ‘advance education’.

I joined the mentoring scheme as I wanted the opportunity to support our young people at this critical part of their lives. Being able to provide encouragement and assist with problem solving in a non-judgemental way and being able to offer a way for mentees to develop and improve their self confidence is a real privilege. I believe that mentoring will offer me opportunities to reflect on my own practices and interpersonal skills. Also, having teenagers myself, I’m looking forward to heaving mentees that actually want to talk to me!My role within Lloyds Banking is as a Recruitment Manager so I am hopeful that my skill set will support mentees with CV writing. Outside of my actual role, the skills that I have learnt during my time within the Group, such as Resilience, I want to be able to share.

I joined the mentoring programme as I am site lead for Connect’s CORE talent programme. I have run the programme for the last 3 years in Pendeford and have seen over 30 colleagues move onto roles they aspire to. The programme is centred around mentoring. Personal branding and interviewing skills as well as confidence building. I take great pleasure and sense of pride as seeing others develop and this alongside my role as Team Manager allows me to fulfil bringing peoples career aspirations one step closer.
