Research in the School of Biomedical Sciences
In the School of Biomedical Sciences we conduct internationally leading cross-disciplinary research which achieves real-world impact. The three major areas of research within the School are
- Integrative Physiology a subject with a rich pedigree at the University of Birmingham, is represented by well-established groupings investigating Early Evidence of Cardio-respiratory Disease and preventative Interventions, Autonomic Neurotransmission in Heart, Blood Vessels and Bladder and by the highly successful Arterial Chemoreceptor and Hypoxia Grouping.
- Translational Biomedical Research which includes research into the biological basis of disease, 3-D imaging of congenitally malformed hearts which aims to make surgical intervention safer, and drug re-purposing for novel treatments of blood cancers. This includes pioneering research being conducted by our School Director of Research, which has resulted in clinical trials in both the UK and in Africa.
- Widening Participation and Educational Research. Our School actively engages in educational research and works closely with HEFI to deliver a number of educational projects which endeavour to transform the educational experience for our students here in Birmingham. In addition the work of Dr Clare Ray and others within the School focus on promoting a range of schemes and activities that encourage participation, success and progression of underrepresented groups in Higher Education. Furthermore our work builds upon the societal impact we are already achieving at the University of Birmingham in the development of innovative and effective educational outreach.
Research within the School of Biomedical Sciences benefits from close relationships and collaborations with other Schools within the Institute of Clinical Sciences, with other Institutes within the College, most notably the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences, Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Institute of Inflammation and Aging and other Colleges within the University. This is in addition to the close partnership the School has with the pharmaceutical industry and leading international centres of research nationally and internationally. The result is cross-disciplinary basic and translational research that is pioneering, internationally competitive and impactful.
