Biosciences - Top six for research
The School of Biosciences has achieved an impressive performance in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF 2014) rising up to 6th place in the Russell Group.
Over 90 per cent of the School’s research is rated as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*), and, since the previous assessment in 2008, the School has seen a threefold increase in 4* research publications and improvements in every measure.
This strong performance has been achieved through focusing on research strengths across the School, and by the recruitment of many new staff, including seven Birmingham Fellows, who have all made a big contribution to the School’s research.
Professor Steve Busby, Head of School, said: “We are delighted with our performance in the REF which is due to the hard work of our brilliant staff at all levels. These results confirm our continued upward trajectory, and assert our place as one of the leading bioscience schools in the UK. We intend to continue to focus on research themes that relate to the current big issues for society, using the most modern cutting-edge biological and biochemical approaches, and we will continue to foster a collaborative and supportive research environment.”
