Tom Dolan - BSc Economics | Monzo Bank, London

After graduating from the University of Birmingham with a degree in economics, I joined Mizuho International plc on their finance graduate scheme and completed the CIMA accounting qualification. After several years in finance working on the firm’s liquidity and capital, I moved to help start their front office treasury team where I worked with the small team of three to manage our funding and liquidity. This included maintaining a £1bn bond portfolio, executing 400+ repo trades each day for funding, and executing FX and deposits to manage our balance sheet.

While in treasury at Mizuho, I used some of my savings and help from friends to purchase an established fitness studio in west London, and ran that as owner (in my spare time) before starting a second fitness studio from scratch the following year. Funding was much easier to raise the second time!

I left Mizuho in early 2016 to join Monzo, a start up challenger bank/fintech, where I’m currently their deputy CFO and treasurer – so in short, I manage all their cash. Monzo is a super energetic and fast paced company, we’re experiencing rapid growth in our customer base at the moment so it’s a really exciting place to be, and the people there are fantastic. I also represent Monzo on the Board of Faster Payments.

I recently joined the Bloc Workout charity as a trustee and treasurer in my spare time, and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into this too as I have no experience working in a charity and the funding challenges it will bring!
