What have you been doing in the 10 years since graduation?
Following my graduation, I started working at PwC as an audit associate. I specialised in the insurance sector and had the opportunity to work with some of the leading global insurers.
I left PwC as a manager and went on to work for Amlin Plc. At Amlin, I worked as an IFRS subject matter expert responsible for the implementation of new accounting standards and resolving complex accounting issues.
I am currently working as a senior manager in the accounting advisory team at EY where I advise insurers on emerging accounting and regulatory issues.
I also got married since leaving University and we have a lovely daughter.
Have you been back to Birmingham since graduation?
I have been living in London for the past ten years. Unfortunately, I have not managed to visit Birmingham following my graduation. This is certainly on my list of things to do.
Are you still in touch with friends that you made while you were here?
Not as much as I would like to. Sometimes work gets in the way!
What did you learn during your time at university that you’ve found valuable since leaving?
It would be difficult to put down in words everything that I have learned during my time at the University. However, if I have to pick one thing I would say that I learned to be a more independent person with confidence in my own abilities.
How did your time at university help your career prospects?
Immensely, I would say. In my final year it became abundantly clear to me that a prospective degree from the University was opening up more doors than I ever could have imagined. I always aspired to work for leading global organisations and a degree from Birmingham has made that possible for me.
What advice would you give to someone who’s just about to start their degree?
Start building your network! Over the years, Birmingham University has produced some of the finest talents. A strong network will help you immensely in the future.
