The Department of Economics is delighted to welcome five new academic staff joining our team this year: Reader Dr. Claire Crawford, Senior Lecturer Dr. Sheikh Selim, Lecturers Dr. Allan Beltran-Hernandez  and Dr. Mary Dawood and Teaching Fellow Dr. Joseph Bromfield.

Dr. Claire Crawford is a Research Fellow of the IFS and held the position of Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick. She was previously Programme Director of the Skills sector at IFS. Her research interests focus on the determinants of educational attainment and HE participation, including the roles of socio-economic status, expectations and aspirations, month of birth and parents' marital status. She is particularly interested in how education policy can be used to improve the outcomes of children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and has played a leading role in the evaluations of a number of education programmes aiming to do just that, including on behalf of the Department of Education and the Education Endowment Foundation.

Dr. Sheikh Selim joined University of Birmingham as the Programme Director (Economics) - Dubai, having previously been a Senior Lecturer of Economics at Westminster Business School (2012-2018), and a lecturer of Economics at Cardiff Business School (2005-2012). His research interests include the economics of growth and development.

Dr. Mary Dawood joined the University of Birmingham as a teaching-focused lecturer in economics. Though based in Birmingham, most of her teaching is delivered at the new Dubai campus. Her research and teaching interests are principally concerned with macroeconomics, financial economics, and applied economics.

Prior to joining the department, Dr. Joseph Bromfield was a teaching fellow in Economics at Aston Business School. His PhD was on maverick firms and merger policy and his research is very diverse, ranging from competition policy to methods of time series econometrics.
