Distinguished Leaders Series: Billie Major
On 18 February Billie Major, Corporate Vice President and Head of Delivery for Capgemini Aspire, delivered a guest lecture as part of Birmingham Business School's Distinguished Leaders Series.
Billie drew on her extensive experience to give an overview of what it takes to be an effective leader, stating that a leader should possess a strong vision that can be communicated in a compelling way, act decisively to effect change, command attention and respect and engender trust and honesty.
Billie explained that a good leader will be in touch with the needs and wants of their clients, possess the ability to learn from their mistakes and adapt to changes in their industry. Billie is well-aquainted with change, as her own service area - I.T - has become a driver of change in all other industries, propelled by the rise of the internet and the need for immediate access to services and information.
Billie Major graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1980 and now leads a team of 2,000 IT professionals delivering and supporting systems across a wide range of solutions for Capgemini's biggest account: HM Revenue & Customs. The solutions developed by Billie’s teams collected £400bn for the UK Government last year.
A Vice President of Capgemini for over ten years, last year, her team met time, cost and quality targets across some 200 projects. Many of the programmes have won IT Industry awards across a variety of categories.
Billie also acts as a mentor on Capgemini's Leadership Academy programme - a fast-track training Programme for future executives. Billie was named as the "Everywoman Technology Team Leader of the Year" in 2011 in recognition of her achievements and received her award from the Princess Royal.
