Distinguished Leaders Series: Stephen Collins
On 11 March 2015 Stephen Collins, Group Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director at SG Hambros Bank Limited, delivered a guest lecture as part of Birmingham Business School's Distinguished Leaders Series.
Stephen gave an overview of his career path; from getting his start working in small businesses and gaining leadership experience at a young age through to acquiring his MBA from Birmingham and going on to train at KPMG before joining Hambros Bank.
Stephen Collins talks about his experiences in his current role and gives advice to students at the University.
Stephen highlighted the qualities that a good leader should possess, which included:
- Communication - particularly the ability to be a good listener.
- Honesty and integrity - the importance of delivering on commitments to engender trust in your team and having a high degree of trust in yourself.
- Delegation - not delegating something you would not be prepared to do yourself.
- Commitment - the importance of hard work and leading by example.
- Positive attitude - having the ability to inspire others.
Stephen joined the Société Générale Private Banking (SGPB) Hambros Group in London in 2001 and has performed various control, support function and related management roles within the organisation prior to his appointment as SGPB Hambros Group Chief Operating Officer in 2008. Stephen joined the main Board of SG Hambros Bank Limited in 2012.
Prior to joining the Société Générale Group Stephen gained a wide variety of business experience working for a number of different organisations including a Japanese investment bank, the Audit & Assurance practice at KPMG and a small owner-managed business serving the chemical industry.
Stephen is a UK qualified financial accountant (FCCA), a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and has an MBA in International Business from the University of Birmingham.
