Steve Kempster joins the Birmingham MBA

From January 2011 Professor Steve Kempster will be taking the reins of the full time MBA programmes at BBS and will be joining the Department of Management.

Steve was previously the Head of the University of Cumbria Business School, an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts Business and Science, and is the Professor of Leadership. Prior to joining Cumbria University Steve was at Lancaster University Management School for 16 years. During this period he was Director of the Leadership Centre, Director of the Northern Leadership Academy and full time Director of the Lancaster MBA. During his time as Director of the MBA he moved the MBA into the FT rankings and up to 28th.

Director of BBS Professor David Dickinson said, “I am delighted to announce Steve’s appointment, which completes a very successful month in hiring senior staff for BBS. With his excellent pedigree in leadership and MBA development he will be an asset to the programme, taking the helm at a time of significant University investment in the Business School and the MBA.”

With a PhD in leadership, Steve has focused his research into leadership development and in particular his research project studies how leaders learn to lead. Recent journal publications have been focused at examining leadership learning as a form of informal apprenticeship. His work on owner manager leadership learning has been published in the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour, and this has shaped the design of the LEAD programme – being rolled out across the North West of England and encompasses over a 1000 businesses.

Prior to entering Higher Education Steve qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and was a director of a property company for five years leading up to 1992. Some of the notable projects were the development of the Ringwood Business Park in Hampshire and the Doncaster Distribution Park at Junction 4 off the M18.

We will be covering Steve’s plans for the MBA in BBS Bitesize, our alumni e-mail newsletter, over the coming months. To ensure you are kept up to date on all developments on the MBA programme ensure you update your details with us.
