Dr Johannes Lohse is an Associate Professor in Economics at the University of Birmingham. He joined the Department of Economics in 2016. Before coming to Birmingham he was a researcher at the University of Heidelberg (from where he obtained his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Timo Goeschl in 2015)

Johannes’ research interests lie at the intersection of behavioural economics and environmental economics. He uses experiments to study voluntary cooperation, pro-environmental behaviour, and climate change mitigation. He is also interested in the cognitive processes that underlie pro-social behaviour.

Biography

Prior to joining the department, Johannes worked as a researcher at the University of Heidelberg where he was involved in interdisciplinary research projects on climate change and aging, the  socio-political impact of the German energy transition, and the cognitive aspects of common pool resource use.

Research

Dr Lohse works at the intersection of behavioural economics and environmental economics. His work spans topics such as intergenerational public good provision, charitable giving, pollution perception, and decisions about sustainability. He has received funding by UKRI to explore pollution perceptions, by the British Academy to study intergenerational conflicts and by AHRC to design behavioural interventions for more sustainable travel behaviour.
