Dr Solon Magrizos is an Associate Professor in Marketing at the University of Birmingham. Prior to this post, he was a post-doctorate researcher in the Centre for Business in Society of Coventry University and he also holds a PhD from Athens University of Economics and Business.

His main research interests surround issues related to ethical companies and ethical consumers. Specifically, he is interested in broader issues around Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) implementation and its link to the firms’ business benefits, with a focus on SMEs and Social Enterprises. He also researches the perceptions and reactions of consumers to firms’ CSR initiatives and also is increasingly interested to issues around Sharing Economy, and Sustainable Tourism. He delivers lectures and manages modules on Business Ethics, Marketing Strategy, Business Communications, and Public Relations.

Biography

For the last 15 years, Solon Magrizos has been studying about, researching on, or working with business. During his studies and work experience he was drawn by the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility and how Business interacts with Society.

Intrigued by the topic, he pursued a relevant PhD from the Department of Marketing and Communications of Athens University of Economics and Business. His thesis examined the link between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and competitiveness of SMEs and the moderating role of stakeholders in this relationship. Solon also worked as a Research Associate to various European-funded Projects: Working for ResponsibleMED, his team interviewed Small and Medium Enterprises’ CSR practices and developed an online tool to help evaluate the impact of CSR actions on their competitiveness. For COGITA, they worked with twelve partners from 9 regions to provide public policy makers with input regarding their CSR approach.

Between 2015-2017, Solon was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Business in Society at Coventry University, where his main tasks involved undertaking research projects focused on Corporate Social Responsibility and SMEs, Social Enterprises and Human Resource Management, and the Ethical Consumer. He was also involved in bidding for, organizing, delivering and disseminating various research bids and calls and also had the opportunity to help bid for, organize and disseminate ESRC events, co-organize a 1-day conference on Circular Economy with the British Academy of Marketing. In the same time, Solon co-supervised one PhD student studying Environmental Management Systems in SMEs.

He has also worked for three years as a Lecturer of Marketing for London Metropolitan University (Business College of Athens Campus) where he taught various Marketing and Public Relations classes. Solon is also a visiting Lecturer of Business Ethics in IES Abroad in London, a non-for profit consortium of American universities offering classes to students in their semester abroad.
