Chris Biehl is a Lecturer in Responsible Business and member of the Lloyds Banking Group Centre for Responsible Business. His interest lies in research and practice of Responsible Business with a focus on Responsible Investment and Corporate Governance.

Biography

Chris Biehl is passionate about researching the present to provide solutions for the next generation. This research forms the basis for his academic teaching and as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy he uses innovative teaching methods in order to make academic research accessible and provide the next generation with the best possible learning experience.

Before joining the University of Birmingham Chris has taught and researched at a variety of universities, including Henley Business School, Beijing Institute of Technology and the University of St Andrews.

Chris' field of research is responsible investment and accountability with a focus on stewardship, which can be seen in his research on the Japanese Principles for Responsible Institutional Investors.

In addition to his passion for fostering the next generation through academic teaching and research, Chris is a mentor for the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation, mentoring the foundations’ scholarship holders in Scotland.

Teaching

Chris teaches a variety of Responsible Business modules on UG, PG and MBA level.

Research

Research interests

Responsible Business, especially Responsible Investment and Corporate Governance.

Using the SDGs as a framework for responsible business and investment and understanding the interconnectedness of the SDG-systems.

Current projects

The Effectiveness of Shareholder Engagement in the UK and Japan: This project analyses the aspects of the stewardship process between investors and investee companies, which determine the effectiveness of such engagements.

Voluntary work as Director of the community interest company ‘Network for Sustainable Financial Markets’ (#NSFMNextGen)

Member of the executive steering committee of the British Accounting and Finance Association, Special Interest Group on Corporate Governance (BAFA SIGCG)
