Biography

Yufeng is Associate Professor (SL) in Operations Management for Global Engineering Networks at the University of Birmingham. Yufeng received his undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering (BEng) and International Finance (BEng) from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1998; earned his Dipl-Ing/MSc in Global Production Engineering with honours from the Technical University of Berlin in 2004; and gained his PhD in Engineering at the University of Cambridge in 2008.  Yufeng’s early industrial career included responsibilities for project management and new business development. He continues working very closely with industry in his research and teaching activities.  

Teaching

Yufeng’s teaching is research informed. He has been the module leader of Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, and International Operations & Procurement courses for UG and PG programmes. He has substantial experiences in teaching MBA, Executive MBA and similar courses in the UK and overseas. Yufeng is actively exploring and experimenting innovative teaching & learning approaches especially in the digital learning environment. He received the university’s award for excellence in teaching and learning in 2013. 

Postgraduate supervision

Yufeng has supervised over 10 PhD students and a large number of MSc dissertation projects in the broad areas of servicing and manufacturing operations and supply chain management. He has external phd examination experiences in universities such as Nottingham, Warwick, and Aston.

Research

Yufeng’s research focuses on network collaboration issues in complex global engineering (manufacturing and servicing) operations.  Within a research framework drawing together engineering technology, business management and economy policy, his research has been supported by a wide range of methods including theoretical development based on qualitative/quantitative data, modelling, and simulation/ optimisation techniques.  He has led or participated in a large number of research projects supported by UK, EU and international funding bodies. 

Other activities

Yufeng was Director of Business Programmes with Engineering, Sciences, Law and Languages.

He serves as a reviewer and guest editor in a wide range of academic journals.

He is an experienced external examiner for UG and PG programmes. 


Publications

Yufeng has published over 60 refereed papers extensively in operations management for global engineering networks and more widely in the areas of international manufacturing, technology management and innovation. In the current REF cycle (2014-2020), Yufeng has produced over 20 high quality research outputs, and many of them are 4* or 3* publications.
