Why did you choose Philosophy at the University of Birmingham?

I had graduated from my UG degree in 1997 – Joint Theology and Philosophy; and went into Secondary and Sixth Form teaching. I enjoyed this well enough, but I had always wanted to push further into some of the issues I had covered, especially in Philosophy. I wanted to firm up my grasp and to give my understanding greater depth. I chose Birmingham because it is a world class university with a great reputation. Plus it was on the doorstep.

What has been the highlight of your course?

I enjoyed the whole experience immensely. The lectures were uniformly engaging and thought provoking, and regularly stretching – exactly what I wanted. The courses were taught by academics that were engaging and keen to bring the students into the territory of the topics. I enjoyed working alongside other students, who were also keen to push themselves as hard as possible. Coming in at a later age, I was a bit concerned whether I would be off on a limb, so to speak, but I needn’t have worried; many good discussions were had.

What have you learnt from your programme?

My knowledge and understanding was broadened and deepened in all modules, even those that I already felt confident about. The assignments were also set with a view to offer opportunity for further exploration of themes. I learnt almost as much writing those essays as I did in class in some cases. The essays were demanding and writing them required that I paid close attention to the method of essay writing. I feel that my skills in academic writing improved considerably in the time I spent on the course.

What is life like as a student at the University of Birmingham?

Good. It’s a lovely campus; better now that the Green space has been completed. The library is excellent, as are the online resources. The facilities generally are becoming of a university of this status. The support offered by the university also seems geared to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to do the best that they can and get the most out of the course.
