Rafailia Thiraiou – MA Art History and Curating

MA Art History and Curating student, Rafailia Thiraiou, tells us more about her experience studying at the University of Birmingham.

Rafailia ThiraiouWhy did you choose Art History and Curating at the University of Birmingham?

“I chose this MA since it was a combination of hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge. The MA also combined Art History and Curatorial practice which makes it one of the few MAs in the world which include art history and curatorial practice in the same programme.”

What has been the highlight of your course?

“The highlight of my course was the module ‘Placement: Art history in the Field’. I was working with Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s team who let me curate a whole exhibition on my own by providing me their help and their knowledge. It was an amazing experience.”

What have you learnt from your programme?

“Resilience, leadership and confidence. I earned and developed those skills in my programme which will help me start my career and be confident about my knowledge and work as a curator. All modules offered me the possibility to be critical of what I see and read which was one of the most valuable skills we were taught.”

What is life like as a student at the University of Birmingham?

“As a student at the University of Birmingham I always felt safe to express my opinion both to my fellow student and to my professors. The academic environment was inspiring and encouraging and the best of it all was the fact that we could approach our professors at any time. Even by doing a full-time MA for a year I felt really quickly a part of the university.

My favourite part was that the University was a multicultural environment where you could interact with different people from around the world and share your knowledge with other students from different subject areas. Overall it was a fun and a very educative experience which I already miss.”
