Chemistry module - Inorganic Chemistry II

Inorganic Chemistry II

The shape and symmetry of molecules determines many chemical properties and underpins important topics such as bonding and characterization.

We will develop the use of group theory as a powerful tool for the analysis of molecular shape and show how it may be applied to a range of molecules, with a focus on transition metal compounds, whose properties range from drug anti-cancer activity to catalytic properties in industrial processes to electrode materials for fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries.

As we continue, we will develop the students' understanding of d-block chemistry, including wider discussion of the second and third row transition elements, properties and characterization of solid-state compounds, and bonding in organometallic complexes.
