Creativity at Birmingham: Drama and Theatre Arts

Regularly topping university league tables, the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts is a pioneer in the integration of dramatic theory and practice. Boasting a professional-standard theatre, we also have many connections with regional arts organisations.

Creative activity in Drama and Theatre Arts includes…

  • Each year the Department stages a season of plays closely tied to its integrated academic and practical work. Productions are performed by third year undergraduates and supported in lighting, sound, design/costume and stage management by second- and first-year students. Plays are directed either by members of the Department or guest directors from the professional theatre.
  • Through the University’s collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), students have the opportunity to learn from the RSC in workshops, masterclasses and Q&A sessions on topics such as playwriting, voice training, stage management, acting and directing.
