50th anniversary

In the academic year 2014-15 the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts is celebrating its 50th anniversary, which we will be marking with special events in the next months.

DTALogo-wide

This important milestone comes as the Department continues to be recognised by the University, by our students and by the academic community for its strong combination of practice and theory, its outstanding quality of teaching, its internationally respected research, its links to the arts industry, as well as its excellent graduate employability prospects.

For members of staff, the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts represents a polyphony of research methodologies and performance practices. It has enabled new and better ways of developing our work, while engaging with the theatre of the city and region. One of the privileges of working here is the opportunity to share and develop our own research interests in collaboration with an enthusiastic and fiercely intelligent Single and Joint Honours student body. Teaching in the Department always feels like a series of hugely enjoyable research seminars or workshops, which become a highlight of the week during term time. It is no surprise that over the years so many of our graduates have gone on to achieve great things and gained so much influence in the wider world of culture and the arts.

We celebrate our 50th anniversary in a year that has seen the University of Birmingham continue to achieve widespread recognition and the Department rated number one overall in the Guardian University league table for 2015 amongst UK Drama Departments.

While reflecting on history, we are also very much facing forward, to the future. This is the ethos shaping the philosophy of the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts and the work of all of us based here.
