This is the first time Pablo Pakula will be testing his new piece YES NO BLACK WITE, with a live audience. The work, a sonata for Generation Snowflake, interrogates the nature of our offense-taking mechanisms. YES NO BLACK WHITE is a cognitive, moral, and sensory attack on your psyche.

In years gone by, the old criticised the young for being reckless and rude. Nowadays, the young stand accused of being over-sensitive and lacking resilience, too quick to take – and too scared to give – offence. Should we resist a world of trigger warnings and no-platforming – or welcome it? Are we more sensitive to ‘micro-aggressions’ – or just less willing to tolerate them?

This new audio-visual performances takes these ideas to task, interrogating the nature of offence. What offends us? How? And why? Ultimately asking, how should we respond?

Following the structure of a sonata and choreographed to five pieces by young Britsh composer Anna Meredith, YES NO BLACK WHITE serves as a kind of Roschach test for our personal offense-taking mechanisms. (You can listen to the soundtrack).

The 30 minute work-in-progress sharing will be followed by a 30 minute discussion and Q&A.

Pablo Pakula is a live artist, performance-maker, and Teaching Fellow at the Drama and Theatre Arts Department. The piece is a continuation of his ongoing investigations on the dramaturgy of lists, notions of musicality, and the exploration of strategies to problematise meaning-making processes.
