Chavs - the demonization of the working class

Writer, commentator and activist, Owen Jones will be in conversation with Dr Joe Bennett at an exclusive event on 9 May 2012.

The event, being held at Waterstone’s on New Street, will discuss the subject of Jones’ bestselling book ‘Chavs’.

‘Chavs’ is an investigation into the myth and reality of working-class life in contemporary Britain. In modern Britain, the working class has become an object of fear and ridicule. From Little Britain's Vicky Pollard to the demonization of Jade Goody, media and politicians alike dismiss as feckless, criminalized and ignorant a vast, underprivileged swathe of society whose members have become stereotyped by one, hate-filled word: chavs.

University of Birmingham staff and students can attend this event free of charge (usually charge £3). To reserve your ticket please contact Waterstone’s, New Street on 0843 2908151 or visit the store.
