As a researcher I'm fascinated by activist cultural production - the infrastructure which supports it, the labour which goes into it and how it proliferates into the wider culture. I use archival records from cultural institutions alongside oral history interviews to understand social movement cultural production. My work is informed by literary studies, feminist scholarship, social movement studies, book history, and Birmingham's historic Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies.

I would greatly welcome conversations with anyone interested in feminist history, queer culture, fandom, science fiction or any combination of the above.

Biography

After completing my BA at SOAS in London, I went on to postgraduate study at the University of Texas at Austin's English department. While in Texas, I had the opportunity to teach across modules in British and American literary history and I was lucky enough to design and convene modules in fields close to my heart, in utopian literature and queer culture. In 2020, I received the Maxine Hairston Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

Research

My research is primarily concerned with feminist and queer cultural production, understanding the institutions which produce such culture and the innovations they create, such as lesbian detective fiction and feminist science fiction.

I am currently working on a monograph on The Women's Press, one of the world's foremost feminist publishers.

I have published in The Activist History Review, Feminist Media Studies, and in McFarland's edited collection on Star Trek: Voyager. I have a forthcoming chapter in The Edinburgh Companion to Women in Publishing.
