Research

I am currently researching the.

Yes, that sentence is complete. I am researching the word the, along with its associates a and an!

There are only three article choices in the English language: the definite article, the; the indefinite article, a/an; and a lack of articles, no article. Despite this, the decision of which article to use presents many problems to those learning English as a second language. Through my research, I will investigate what native speakers know about the articles in English, how they choose which article to use and, through these things, hopefully be able to improve the teaching of English articles to second language learners of English.

This research is being conducted as part of the Out Of Our Minds research group, a group dedicated to investigating how languages are learnt. For more information about this wonderful team of people, please see our website: https://outofourminds.bham.ac.uk
