B-Film: The Birmingham Centre for Film Studies was delighted to hold the Inaugural B-Film Annual Lecture at The Electric Cinema on Saturday 14 January.

Dr Andrew Watts and Professor Rob Stone

The lecture was introduced by Dr Andrew Watts and Professor Rob Stone and was delivered by Professor Linda Williams, a world renowned scholar and Professor in Film & Media and Rhetoric in the Department of Film and Media in the University of California at Berkeley.  Her brilliant lecture, entitled ’"Tales of sound and Fury” Signifying... Something, or, The Elephant of Melodrama’ offered nothing less than a revisionist history of the cinema and, indeed, the discipline of Film Studies, and was followed by a screening of a pristine print of Alfred Hitchcock’s REBECCA. This was a very proud day for B-Film.

The Electric Cinema was packed out with friends and members of B-Film, including many undergraduate and postgraduate students of film at the University of Birmingham. B-Film is based in EDACS and the event was funded by the Department of Film and Creative Writing.
