Beyond the Battlefields: Käthe Buchler's Photographs of Germany in the Great War
- Aston Webb - Rotunda Gallery (First Floor) (R6 on campus map)
The Voices of War & Peace WW1 Engagement Centre is organising an exhibition of photographs which will be on display at the University in the Rotunda Gallery, Aston Webb and in Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery from 20 October 2017.
Beyond the Battlefields: Käthe Buchler’s Photographs of Germany in the Great War draws on the collection of photos held at the Museum of Photography in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony. It will explore Käthe Buchler’s photographs of injured soldiers returning to Braunschweig, images of women doing men’s jobs and the contributions of children to the war effort.
The exhibition on campus will also feature images and archive material relating to the University during the period and its role as the 1st Southern General Hospital. This is the first time that Buchler’s photographs have been displayed outside Germany. The exhibition closes on 14 January 2018.
There will be a series of events to accompany the exhibition, including symposia on women & WW1 and on Birmingham’s WW1 experience. Please visit the Voices of War and Peace website for more details or contact Centre Coordinator, Dr Nicola Gauld.
Beyond the Battlefields is a touring exhibition co-organised by the UHGalleries, Museum Für Photographie, Braunschweig and the AHRC funded First World War engagement centres at the University of Birmingham and the University of Hertfordshire.
