David works in the Initial Teacher Education team as a lecturer in Secondary Mathematics Education. He teaches on the PGDipEd (QTS) Secondary Mathematics programme and the Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course. David also supervises students on the MA Teaching Studies programme. He previously worked with the Outreach team offering mathematics support to a range of schools and students across the West Midlands.

David completed his own Initial Teacher Education at the University of Birmingham. His department won the TES award for ‘Maths Team of The Year 2015’ for their innovative approaches to teaching mathematics. He has also worked as a head of department where students of all abilities achieved excellent progress.

David has a lot of experience teaching groups of mixed prior attainment and he used this experience in 2016 when he contributed lesson materials for the EEF funded project on Best Practice in Mixed-Attainment Teaching. This work was awarded the 2016 BCF-BERA Routledge Curriculum Journal Prize.

Biography

David undertook his undergraduate degree at the University of Birmingham and completed his Initial Teacher Training at the same University. Since then he has worked as a mathematics teacher in Birmingham and was head of mathematics at Kings Norton Girls’ School. David strongly believes that students of all abilities can be challenged and have access to a broad curriculum in order to both enjoy their learning and make good progress. As part of his outreach role David works closely with five mathematics departments across the city in an aim to help raise both attainment and aspiration in those schools. He also works with A-level A2B students supporting them mathematically in order to help them achieve the grades they require to take up places in Higher Education.

Research

Other activities

David is an active member of the ATM. He has presented at Birmingham branch meetings. He is also currently authoring a book about structuring mathematics lessons effectively.
