Ruolin is a lecturer in Educational Linguistics. She is the TEFL Programme Lead and the module lead for Researching Education and Communicative Language Teaching. Before joining the School of Education, Ruolin worked as a lecturer in Education and a researcher in Applied Linguistics at the University of York. Ruolin has extensive experience in teaching TESOL and Applied linguistics at undergraduate level. Her research interests include language testing and assessment, test preparation and washback, validity and validation.

Postgraduate supervision

Ruolin has supervised many PG students studying TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education. She is currently supervising 8 MA TEFL students.

Doctoral research

PhD title
The effect of IELTS test preparation and repeated test taking on Chinese candidates' IELTS results,  general proficiency,  and their subsequent academic attainment.

  • Oct, 2018 – Jun, 2019, Researcher, Project title: Are university language entry requirements set too low to enable international students to fulfil their academic potential? Funded by Pearson, £10,000.
  • 2016 – 2017, Co-researcher, collaborative research project with Dr. Danijela Trenkic (lead researcher) and Dr. Burr Settles from Duolingo (industrial partner) Project title: Chinese students’ English proficiency and academic performance
  • Sep – Nov, 2014, Research assistant for Dr. Danijela Trenkic’s project on the academic language proficiency of home and international university students
