Alison is Director of Primary Initial Teacher Education (ITE) at the University of Birmingham. She also heads up the science and computing modules on the primary ITE programmes.

Alison joined the School of Education in January 2010. She has a very strong background in Early Years/ Primary education, having taught for many years in a number of primary schools across the West Midlands area. As well as working in senior management positions in schools, Alison also had a wider role, supporting teachers to develop their ICT skills.

Prior to teaching, Alison worked as a government researcher, researching aspects of employment and government based employment training schemes.

Alison is a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is also an external examiner within the specialist field of ITE.

Research interests

Alison’s research interests are in education, particularly:

  • School dogs and their role in animal assisted activity (AAA), animal assisted therapy (AAL) and animal assisted learning (AAL)
  • Therapy dogs
  • Wellbeing
  • Technology Enhanced Learning in primary school settings
  • Outdoor learning spaces
