After gaining his PGCE in 1994 Russell Manning worked as a Teacher of History at the Earls High School in Halesowen.  He worked at this school for ten years and held the following posts; Deputy Head of Year, Second in Humanities and Head of History.  During this time he also co-ran the annual Summer Literacy School and worked as the History Mentor in the school for the University of Birmingham for eight years.  He taught R.E, Geography and History.

  • B.A. (Hons) in History Anglia Polytechnic University


  • His main teaching responsibility is on the History PGDip course.  He also contributes the R.E. PGDip.
  • He is the Whole School Issues coordinator for the Secondary PGDip.
  • He contributes to the Primary PGDip.


Research interests

Investigating how Key Stage Three History impacts on pupils’ understanding of British national identity.

Other activities

  • External examiner since 2008 for the History PGCE at University West of England
  • Committee member of the History Teacher Education Network and a Committee member of the Midlands History Forum.
