Engineering mathematics aptitude test

The Engineering mathematics aptitude test is a performance test designed to test your mathematical ability. If you have an alternative qualification to A-level maths, as part of the application process our Admissions Tutors may wish to assess your mathematical ability via a Mathematics Aptitude test.

If you are required to take the test, based on when you submit your application, it will form part of the decision-making process on your application and will need to be taken prior to any offer being made, or be added as a condition of your offer.

You will receive an email from us asking you to register for the test. Once you have registered you will be sent further information including the time, location and a sample paper. You must register for and sit this test for your application to be considered, or for you to meet the condition of your offer, based on when you submitted your application.

Test dates - 2024 entry

There will be one opportunity to take the maths test based on when you submitted your application. This is to ensure fairness to all those taking the tests; to give our Admissions team enough time to process the results; and to give you enough time to decide on your application.

  • Applications submitted by January 31st will be invited to sit the test on April 4th;
  • Applications submitted by March 31st will be invited to sit the test on May 29th;
  • If you apply after March 31st and meet our other entry requirements, the maths test will be added as a condition of your offer;
  • Applications submitted by June 30th will be invited to sit the test on July 18th.

The tests will take place on the University of Birmingham campus.

You will be contacted regarding registration for the test no later than 2 weeks prior to the test date which applies to you.

If you are invited to the test and can’t make the date, please let us know as soon as possible. If you miss your assigned test date, your application will be declined.

The outcome of your Mathematics Aptitude test will be communicated via a decision made on your UCAS application. Unfortunately, we are unable to give feedback on the test due to the multiple dates it is being ran. We are also unable to provide the pass mark for the test.
