Biography

Stephen Hanham received the BE (Hons) and BSc degrees from the University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia in 2004 and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Information Engineering from the University of Sydney, Australia in 2010.

From 2008 to 2010 he was a Research Project Officer and later a Systems Engineer at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Sydney, Australia working on THz antennas and detectors, mobile satellite terminals and radio telescope antenna systems.

From 2010 to 2017, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and later as an Experienced Researcher in the Physics and Material Science Departments at Imperial College London, UK. Whilst there, his research examined biological applications of terahertz radiation as well as various aspects of terahertz plasmonics, metamaterials, two dimensional materials and dielectric resonators.

In 2012 and 2013, he was the recipient of Research Excellence Grants from the European Metrology Research Programme to investigate metrological aspects of microwave near-field imaging.

In 2017, he moved to the University of Birmingham to take up the position of Senior Birmingham Fellow and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering. In addition to his work at the University of Birmingham, Stephen holds an Honorary Lectureship in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London.
