Aziza Mahomed is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering.

Aziza has published over 20 research papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings, as well as a book chapter in the field of biomedical engineering (biomaterials).

Aziza is an advocate for engineering education, a contributor to the School of Engineering Education committee and to the School’s outreach activities.

Qualifications

Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice, awarded with Merit, University of Birmingham, 2017
  • Chartered Engineer, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 2011
  • Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE), 2011
  • PhD in Biomaterials (Mechanical Engineering), University of Birmingham, 2009
  • MEng in Mechanical Engineering, Durham University, 2005

Biography

Dr Aziza Mahomed graduated in 2005 with a 1st Class MEng Mechanical Engineering with an Industrial placement, from Durham University.  Aziza’s undergraduate research specialism was in orthopaedic implants.

Aziza graduated in 2009 with a PhD in biomaterials (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of Birmingham. Her doctoral thesis research was entitled “Properties of elastomers for small-joint replacements”. This was followed by a Research Fellow (2009-2012) post, which involved carrying out research on spinal implants and worked in the Biomedical Engineering Research Group at the University of Birmingham.  She became a Chartered Engineer during this post. In February 2012, she joined  DePuySynthes (Johnson & Johnson) in Cork (Ireland) as a Marie Curie Experienced Research Fellow on a 24 month secondment. Following this post, she returned to the University of Birmingham and was based at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, working on an ERDF project.

Aziza was appointed as a Teaching Fellow in April 2015, at the School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Birmingham, and then, in August 2017, as a Lecturer.

Teaching

Mechanical Engineering:

  • Mechanics 2
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Synoptic Mechanical Engineering
  • Integrated Design Project 1

Research

Aziza’s previous research activity was focused on studying the mechanical and wear properties of artificial orthopaedic implants.

Aziza’s current research activity is within the area of engineering education
