Our range of undergraduate programmes in mechanical engineering will prepare you to solve real-world problems in an ever-changing industry.

[New Engineering building exterior and interior] You'll benefit from our state-of-the-art dedicated facilities and student spaces, design team ritual learning experience, and prepare you for life after study.[Students at computers and doing experiments in laboratories] Our programmes harness innovation and collaboration through both our shared engineering first year, where you will study engineering fundamentals alongside other types of engineers, to our integrated design projects where you will tackle a current societal challenge with students from other engineering disciplines to prepare you for life after your studies.[Students using industrial machinery/equipment and on computers].

Our programmes are designed and informed by industry, and the department has connections with a variety of industries within the West Midlands, providing you the opportunity to take part in industry-led design modules and final year projects. [University of Birmingham Racing Team working on a project]. You'll have the opportunity to get involved and be part of our UBRACING team. Our university formula student team provides a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an engineering task, building great team working ability.

Dr Richard Hood, Undergraduate Admissions

Department of Mechanical Engineering

“The Department welcomes many UG international students from regions across the world including, Europe, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, China, Malaysia and many more. Below we have provided some useful information for 2021 applicants, including what to expect during your first year, and some first-hand experiences from our current Mechanical Engineering students.”

Your first year at Birmingham

Your first year as a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Birmingham will be an interesting and exciting time full of new experiences and challenges.

Here are a few of the highlights you can expect from your first year:

  • You will have the opportunity to take part in many design projects that will be conducted in a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment.
  • You will be working with team members and academics from disciplines across Mechanical, Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering, and Civil Engineering.
  • Mechanical Engineering is a very well connected with a variety of industries located in the West Midlands region and you will have the opportunity to take part in industry led design modules and final year projects.
  • There are numerous student clubs and societies to get involved in:
UBRacing, established in 1997 is a club where students from across various disciplines come together to build a single seater race car and compete in it against other racing clubs throughout the world.
Mechanical Engineering Society (MechSoc) brings together students within Mechanical Engineering and provides a social side to your degree so you can make the most of your time at Birmingham. MechSoc regularly hold social nights, students vs staff sport matches or quizzes, and offer industrial talks from prospective employers and apprentice scheme holders.

Hear from our international community

One of the best ways to find out what life is really like as an international Mechanical Engineering student is to hear from them! Here, our students and recent graduates talk about their experiences and give real insight into student-life at Birmingham. To see full student profiles as well as student videos and much more, please see our International Students Information page.

 Hetian, a Mechanical Engineering student

"One of the best points of my course are the design projects. I've found these quite a challenge but also interesting and a very practical experience. The projects really give you an understanding of how to collaborate with other disciplines and how to work out a real project step by step."
Hetian, BEng Mechanical Engineering (Automotive) student

 Ali, a Mechanical Engineering graduate

"The course is a diverse mixture of many skills and its integration with the civil and the electrical engineers helps to gain more insight. The projects encourage collaboration and team work where frequent social interaction is required."

Ali, BEng Mechanical Engineering graduate

 Justin, a Mechanical Engineering graduate.

"One of the best points of the course is that the lecturers give you the freedom to solve assignments and so you're able to learn more and carry out your own research. I also learned to adapt to new environments and to work with strangers to meet deadlines."

Justin, MEng Mechanical Engineering graduate
