Independent Micropalaeontology Research Project

amy-jones-microscopeYou are asked to prepare an independent, original report and oral presentation on a project that emphasizes the use of microfossils to address a stratigraphic and/or environmental problem. The project should be professionally presented and clearly demonstrate competency in the application of at least one major microfossil group. All sample material will be curated and recorded appropriately as part of the project submission. Projects may be chosen from a prepared list or may be designed following discussions with staff.

Examples of previous projects include:

  • Permian and Carboniferous Palynology of Gondwana–an investigation into the subsurface of South Oman, Arabia
  • Upper Cretaceous Calcareous Nannofossil Biostratigraphy of Shark teeth from England
  • Biostratigraphy and evolutionary response of tropical planktonic foraminifera to the Eocene-Oligocene transition within the Foz do Amazonas Basin, equatorial Atlantic margin
  • Palaeoceanographic reconstructions from Miocene ostracod communities in the southern Indian Ocean
  • Foraminifera of the Isle of Thanet Chalk, Kent and their biostratigraphic significance
  • Dinoflagellate cysts from the Eocene, Alabama and Palaeoenvironmental Implications
  • Taxonomy of Miocene to Pliocene reticulofenestrid coccolithophores from the southeastern Indian Ocean
  • Is planktic foraminifera Acarinina bullbrooki a reliable biostratigraphic marker?
  • Palynology and palynofacies of the Late Cretaceous sediments from Ruvuma and Mandawa basins south-eastern coast Tanzania.
  • Re- assessment of the importance of the Sverdrupiella flora. Exceptionally preserved specimens from the Triassic of Alaska
  • Cenomanian-Turonian foraminiferal assemblages, offshore SE Tanzania: Biostratigraphy and faunal response to OAE2
