Professor Tony Hallam, 1933-2017

The School regrets to announce the death on 23 October of Emeritus Professor Tony Hallam, holder of the Lapworth Chair of Geology.

Tony was one of the foremost palaeontologists and Earth historians of the second half of the 20th century. He was appointed Lapworth Professor of geology in 1977. This prestigious chair was named in honour of Charles Lapworth, the first Professor of geology. Tony's research interests concentrated on the Jurassic Period, with particular reference to stratigraphy, sea level changes and palaeontology. He was also interested in mass extinctions, especially the end Triassic event. Following retirement in 1999, Tony remained at the University as Professor Emeritus.
