Working with industry - my mapping project

For my mapping project I worked with Tarmac, undertaking six weeks of industry-led geological mapping in and around two limestone quarries in Derbyshire.

The aim of the project was to understand the structural development of rock in the quarries, one of which is currently inactive, and the controls on the distribution of metalliferous minerals associated with faulting in the limestone. In addition to mapping exposed rock in the quarries, I worked with samples from a new set of boreholes, as well as using geophysical equipment to measure ground resistivity. I had the opportunity to work with professional geologists, giving me real insights into the work of geologists in the aggregates industry.

Working alongside an industry partner has allowed me to practise skills learned at university in the working world, to focus on a clear set of objectives for my project, and to develop my time management, teamwork and communication skills.
