Mr Hale is currently working as part of the Liveable Cities project, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). This project aims to explore the broader wellbeing impacts of low carbon interventions for cities. Specifically, he is exploring how different lighting technologies and building densities impact on ecosystem services. Prior to this he was part of the Urban Futures research project also funded by the EPSRC.

Mr Hale is currently working towards submitting a PhD thesis by publication.

Prior to this research post, Mr Hale worked as an ecologist and spatial planner for Aberdeen City Council and for Birmingham City Council within the Eastside regeneration project team.

Mr Hale has a particular interest in urban landscape ecology. He has modeled the response of various species to different land cover and land uses and is working to test the ecological impacts of different urban landscape development scenarios. Recent work has focused on the impact of artificial lighting on bat movement, using the finest resolution aerial night photography ever captured for entire cities. See the Artificial Lighting and Low Carbon Cities on the Liveable Cities project page for more information.
