Aim of the Module

This module introduces, examines and explores some of the functions and modes of diplomacy in the context of international economic relations. Using a mix of conceptual work, real-event case studies, and negotiation simulation exercises it explores traditional forms of inter-state diplomacy, as well as non-traditional forms of diplomacy involving non-state actors such as international organisations, business, and civil groups.

Case studies will be taken from some of the following recent events: Russia-India arms negotiations; the current WTO Doha Round negotiations; debt forgiveness negotiations; Enron-India negotiations; Shell- Nigeria negotiations; EU accession negotiations; Algerian pipeline negotiations, sanctions against Kuwait;  debt for nature swap talks; USA-Canada acid rain talks; deep seabed mining multilateral negotiations.

The Course aims:

  • To familiarise students with the issues, actors, functions, modes and context of international economic diplomacy.
  • To evaluate contending approaches to diplomacy.
  • To develop an understanding of the relationship between the processes of globalisation and economic diplomacy.
  • To analyse bargaining strategies and especially how weak actors negotiate with strong actors in the  international political economy.

  • Term one 1 x 2000 word case study analysis 50%
  • Term one 1 x 3000 word simulation report 50%
