Overview

The public sector is a changing, challenging, and rewarding environment to work in and for over 50 years INLOGOV has been at the forefront of the provision of training and critical thinking on the issues facing the sector.

This programme builds on our decades of experience to provide you with a state of the art Executive Apprenticeship in public management and leadership.The programme is designed in close collaboration with your employer, and in partnership with SOLACE, to ensure you are equipped with the knowledge, skills and qualities required to be an effective and dynamic public sector manager and leader able to drive your organization forward.The programme is innovative in its design and is at the forefront of best practice.

The programme combines interactive online study with campus based ‘face to face’ enquiry-led activities, drawing together the strengths of these different platforms to ensure a high quality learning experience. At various points in the programme we will also have contributions from senior leaders from across the public sector who will join us to share their experiences and offer case study examples.You will be able to benefit from the invaluable experience of learning while on the job, paid, while also being given time away from work to study. The design of the programme also means that all your study is applicable to your organizational context and you will be able to apply your learning in real-time, not only benefitting you but your organization too.

The programme will be delivered through our innovative blend of online and campus-based teaching, offering a tailored learning experience and the opportunity to study in the UK’s leading academic centre for local governance and public management. 

Who is the programme for?

The programme is designed for individuals with senior leadership potential working in the public sector and is paid for by your employer through the apprenticeship levy. The programme offers you the opportunity to combine paid work with in practice learning, and University study.

On successful completion of the course you will have acquired the knowledge, skills and qualities necessary to become a dynamic and effective leader of your public sector organisation. On successful completion of the programme you will be awarded with an Executive Apprenticeship, a Master’s degree in Public Management and Leadership and a professionally recognised management qualification.

Modules

The programme is also structured in such a way as to ensure that a community of practice is facilitated; providing a strong network of new leaders who will continue learning and supporting one another long after the programme is completed.

You will be required to complete six compulsory (core) taught modules; a dissertation (a bespoke piece of work-based research that will benefit your organization); and will compile a portfolio of work-based evidence.

The Executive Apprenticeship will be paid for through your employer, there will be no costs incurred by you.

All employers who have a payroll over £3 million pay an Apprenticeship Levy. They can use this levy to fund your enrolment on the programme.

Entry requirements

The normal admission requirement for our taught postgraduate programmes is a good first degree or an equivalent professional qualification. Subject to interview (and sometimes to a special test) candidates without a first degree may be admitted onto this programme. It will also be at the discretion of your employer whether you meet their requirements for the course.

Learning and teaching

Typically the taught modules are assessed through a variety of essay-based and task-orientated assignments. Each module will include at least one or more assignments, equivalent to a total of 4000 words per module. From the outset, we will provide you with clear guidance on assessed work, the marking criteria and deadlines. You will also have a personal tutor who will provide you with support throughout the programme in order to help you get the most out of your studies with us.

You will be also do an extended work-based dissertation research project (a dissertation) of between 10,000-12,000 words that will be on an issue of specific interest to your organization. You will be assigned a dedicated supervisor to help guide you through the process of designing, researching and writing your dissertation.

By the end of the programme you will also need to produce a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the skills you have acquired throughout the Executive Apprenticeship. Your INLOGOV personal tutor and your employer based tutor will support you through the creation of your portfolio.

The programme has the exclusive endorsement of SOLACE, the representative body for Chief Executives and senior managers working in the UK. This reiterates INLOGOV’s commitment to teaching content that is highly relevant, applicable and useful for people working in the public sector. Your apprenticeship experience will also be designed in close collaboration with your employer, which means that you will be in an excellent position to excel within your organization, or elsewhere in the public sector, on completion of the programme.
