POLSIS Academic Wins International Studies Association Award
Dr Gerasimos Tsourapas, Lecturer in Middle East Politics at POLSIS, has been awarded the 2017 Martin O. Heisler Award by the International Studies Association, sponsored by the Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Migration Section (ENMISA), for his paper entitled: 'Labor Migrants as Political Leverage? Population Mobility and Coercion in the Arab World.'
The paper, presented at the 2016 ISA Annual Meeting, looks at political implications associated with Egyptian labour migrant presence in Jordan and Libya, and questions how labour migration affects interstate relations. Methodologically, the paper draws on variety of materials both in English and Arabic including analysis of Egyptian and Arabic news media, archival research in Egypt, and elite interviews conducted in Cairo. The paper provides evidence that existence of sizable labour emigrant populations abroad render sending states vulnerable to host states' attempts at political coercion.
