I am Postgraduate Research Director in POLSIS. My main research interests and areas of PG supervision are: European populism and neo-nationalism in comparative perspective, party organisation, Italian politics, and political communication.

Qualifications

  • MA
  • PhD
  • PCLT(HE)

Biography

Having graduated from the University of Bologna, I completed my doctoral research in political communication at London Metropolitan University and my Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (Higher Education) at Canterbury Christ Church University. I taught at both these universities before moving to Birmingham in 2004.

Teaching

My teaching focuses on European politics. In September 2018 I will start teaching a new module on populism in comparative perspective.

Postgraduate supervision

I am interested in supervising students in the following areas: European populism and neo-nationalism in comparative perspective, party organisation, Italian politics, and political communication.

Research

The major strand of my work has been about populism in Western Europe. I have also published on party organisation, Italian politics, Swiss politics, and the communication strategies, styles of propaganda and mass media use of political parties in contemporary Europe. My monograph Populists in Power, co-written with Duncan McDonnell, has been published by Routledge in February 2015. In the same period, my work on Italian politics has led to the publication of a special issue of Modern Italy entitled: 'Berlusconi's Impact and Legacy', which I have co-edited with James Newell.

I have also co-edited Twenty-first Century Populism: The Spectre of Western European DemocracyResisting the Tide Cultures of Opposition Under Berlusconi (2001-06) and The Media, An Introduction - Third edition.

Other activities

I have convened the Political Studies Association's Italian Politics Specialist Group for about 10 years and I am now the group’s secretary. I have acted as a reviewer for government bodies, publishers, academic journals, and funding organisations. I am a member of the panels "Sociology of Culture" and "Political Science", assessing the quality of the research conducted in Italian Universities on behalf of the National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research Systems.
