Matthew Whiting joined POLSIS in 2017. His research interests focus on the radicalisation and moderation of non-state armed groups, with a particular interest in the cases of Irish republicanism and the Kurds in Turkey.

Biography

Matthew Whiting is a Lecturer in comparative politics at POLSIS. His research uses mixed methods to examine the moderation and radicalisation of non-state armed group and state responses to internal threats. He has a particular interest in the Kurds in Turkey and Sinn Féin and the IRA in Northern Ireland.

He completed his PhD at the LSE in 2014. He previously worked as a Teaching Fellow at the LSE (where he won two teaching excellence awards), a Lecturer at the University of Kent, and a Research Associate at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University.

 Current projects

Matthew is currently undertaking an analysis of why some non-state armed groups are more likely to become political parties than others, using qualitative comparative analysis.

He is also working on a project on the state of emergency in Turkey after the failed coup of 2016 and a project on polarization in Northern Ireland following the peace process.
