Rethinking post-conflict statebuilding through the impact of traditional healers in the Mozambican traditional justice system

dantas-samaraSupervisors: Dr Jonathan Fisher, Dr Nicolas Lemay-Hebert (co-supervisor)

Samara Guimarães is a doctoral researcher in International Development. She is looking at the impact and perceptions of legitimacy of the traditional healers in the traditional justice system in post-conflict Mozambique, analyzing how the relationships between the state and traditional healers impact upon perceptions of legitimacy.  In Mozambique, the hybridisation of legal orders reflects the adjustment of judicial and indirect forms of administrative organization resulting in a complex socio-legal field comprehended as a dynamic network in which many actors interact. In this scenario traditional healers are key non-state actors assisting the state with core policing functions My research represents a critical approach to liberal peacebuilding through Hybridity and Post-Liberalism in International Relations. The recognition of the local needs emerges as a more critical version and praxis of liberal peacebuilding and statebuilding in IR, moving away from a hierarchical international system and highlighting the political importance of everyday issues and locally forms of representative institutions of statehood which are often connected to resistance, customs and traditions.

I recently presented my research at the International Studies Association's 58th Annual Convention in Baltimore, Maryland.
