Podcast: From Electoral Despair to Where?: Has Brexit Given the Liberal Democrats a Lifeline?
POLSIS was delighted to welcome the department's newest recruit Professor David Cutts to deliver the latest in the departmental seminar series. Professor Cutts' presentation "From Electoral Despair to Where?: Has Brexit Given the Liberal Democrats a Lifeline?" provided a comprehensive dissection and analysis of the fortunes of the party since their disastrous result in the 2015 general election. The seminar examined the election campaign, whether tuition fees were to blame for the party's poor performance, and whether the party might reposition itself as the pro-Europe party following the EU referendum. Dr Karin Bottom of the Institute of Local Government Studies responded to Professor Cutts' presentation.
Seminar convenor Dr Mark Goodwin commented: "It was a pleasure to welcome Professor Cutts to give a seminar on his forthcoming book, particularly as he has recently joined the department as a new member of staff. Professor Cutts' expertise in the field of elections and political behaviour will be vital to the future research and teaching of the department and it is a very positive sign for the performance of POLSIS that we have been able to recruit such an accomplished scholar. The seminars provide a forum for leading academics to present up-to-the-minute contemporary research and work in progress to Birmingham scholars, and also bring students into contact with the most respected academics in their fields of study"
The POLSIS Departmental Seminar series brings leading scholars to the University to present cutting-edge research in the fields of Political Science and International Studies.
